Actavis is always looking for innovative ways to produce high quality, affordable products in the most sustainable manner possible.
Sustainability and continual improvement are both high priorities as demonstrated by the following selection of projects:
In Autumn 2011, the Dupnitza Manufacturing site in Bulgaria was short-listed for an 'International Green Award for Creativity in Sustainability' for their solvent reduction programme. The Research and Development team implemented an innovative program for replacement of organic solvents with non-organic alternatives during granulation and coating stages of production. By tackling the issue at source, VOC emissions have been dramatically reduced at this high volume solid oral dose manufacturing location.
Our other Bulgarian site, Troyan, has also successfully reduced solvent usage by analyzing the process and modifying work practices.
The coal boiler in the Chinese facility in Foshan was replaced with a cleaner gas system in 2009 ensuring compliance and reducing air emissions.
Liquid from the Wastewater Treatment Facility at our Indian Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) plant is treated to such a high standard that it can be re-used in the cooling water system.
Almost all manufacturing sites have implemented energy conservation projects to reduce energy intensity (KWh per unit output) and minimise our carbon footprint.
Actavis' oncology manufacturing facility in Romania has demonstrated a forward looking approach to innovative energy conservation and use of renewable energy solutions. Fossil fuels for thermal energy use have been totally eliminated.
A solar thermal power system has been installed at the Actavis' warehouse/office facility providing all hot water requirements for the canteen and sanitary services. This facility also operates an innovative heat recovery system which uses groundwater to cool buildings in the summer, via the air conditioning, and to heat them during the colder months.
Actavis' manufacturing plant in Iceland is powered completely by renewable energy and in 2011 Actavis in Malta installed a solar water heating system to supply packaging and the analytical services laboratory.
Sustainable manufacturing does not stop at our factory doors. Actavis is actively engaged with suppliers evaluating their performance to ensure we work with suppliers who demonstrate their commitment to protecting the environment.
