Climate change

Actavis climate change

Actavis understands that climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing our world today. In recognition of the importance of climate change, Actavis established an Energy Management Programme in 2008 to direct and support sites to reduce their carbon footprint.

Sharing best practice is a key element of this programme. Examples include:

Our facility in Iceland is taking advantage of Reykjavik’s extensive geothermal water distribution system. Geothermal water is used to provide all heating for offices, laboratories and the manufacturing site. Electricity is also sourced solely from geothermal energy which is a clean, renewable source of power.

Actavis in Romania operates two heat recovery systems (one between the chilled water loop and the hot water loop, and the second between the air conditioning system and the ground water table). This clean technology is better for the environment and allows us to operate more cost effectively.

Our manufacturing site in Nerviano, Italy, has successfully completed several energy reduction programmes related to their utility usage. The local team have also achieved 40% reduction in the freeze drying cycle time for one of their leading products. Freeze drying is an energy intensive process so this reduction yields significant benefits. There is an ongoing programme of energy efficiencies at this Italian facility and at other sites worldwide.

Our approach

We aim to procure and use energy efficiently to reduce environmental impact and minimise costs.

Energy efficiency and a focus on renewable energy options are the cornerstones of the programme.

The Energy Management strategy combines existing talents and skills at local manufacturing sites with a strong emphasis on teamwork, training and education.
